Well last week the column was on eating healthy. This week I want to write to you about something awesome the “Green Juice.”

OK now we all know that we should stop eating 3 hours prior to sleep because digestion takes a lot of energy. During sleep our body needs to repair but if it is busy with digestion it can’t.

I have been drinking green juice for a while now and it totally changed my life.

You may drink juices or smoothies.

Actually smoothies and juices offer different benefits. Both can be included in your health regime. Let me distinguish between the two. Juices are made by using a juice extractor; smoothies are made with whole fruits and vegetables mixed together in a blender.

With juices you are getting the liquid and not the fibers from the fruits and vegetables. However, juices provide rapid nutrients to our cells. Our body is able to absorb these minerals and nutrients without the need to breakdown and digest bulky fibers. The body can assimilate these nutrients from the juice in a matter of minutes instead of hours. Beginning your day with fresh juice will provide your body with instant vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemicals and more. Doing this daily provides your body with high doses of naturally derived nutrients that have many immune boosting benefits, some of which can protect the body against toxins and diseases.

When you decide to get into the habit of drinking “Green Juices” it’s best to start with spinach, kale, chard and lettuce. You can find a variety of lettuces in the supermarket and or open market. But avoid iceberg lettuce, they lack nutrients.

If you prefer your “Green Juice” to be more sweet or sour many options are available, apples, pears, citrus, pineapples, carrots, plums, berries kiwi, lemon, limes, and more. When you are first starting out, feel free to add as much apples and pears to make it suitable to your taste. Over time your taste buds will adjust and you’ll find that you wont need to add a lot fruits.

By the way diabetics should stick to low glycemic fruits like apples and pears to sweeten their juices.

And the good news is you can refrigerate your juices, just place them in an airtight jar. Juices made with a masticating juicer can last up 2-3 days. If made with centrifugal juicers drink within 24 hours.

With the leftover pulp you can create delicious flax crackers, muffins, cakes especially with carrot pulp.

And other benefits of “Green Juice” are it’s very cleansing and assists in the removal of toxins that people absorb on daily basis. It also fosters healthy weight loss, helps to alkalize the body and this is quite important as many diseases thrive in acidic conditions. “Green Juice” also strengthens your immune system. And finally gives you more energy as juicing reduces the energy your body needs to digest foods.

If you have read so far and willing to start here are a few recipes but feel free to make your own.

Start with a base of celery and or cucumber. Select one type of leafy greens and sweeten with fruit. For an example, cucumbers, apples and parsley.

Isn’t this very easy?

OK so you may want to try another one…

1 green pear, (halved), 2 celery stalks, 2 cucumbers, 1 bunch parsley, a piece of 1-1.5cm peeled ginger, 2 sections of orange with rind left on.

My “Green Juice” I am sipping while writing this column is 1 red apple, 1 green apple, 1 kiwi, half a peeled lime, a bunch of parsley, a bunch of chard, 2 small cucumbers, a piece of 1-1.5cm peeled ginger.

Like me you may want to drink in the morning, in the afternoon and while watching TV at night. It really is so easy to make and also delicious.
