I DO!

What do you feel when you hear an ambulance siren?

What do you feel when you hear an ambulance siren?

Especially if you are in traffic and the heart-rending sound of the siren comes from behind you. Don't you feel terrible?

I do!

First a wave of panic washes over me, my brain starts working like a machine trying to decide the best course of action at that moment. How to move into the right lane while everybody on the right lane just keeps on rushing, ignoring you as if you don't exist.

Then once you manage to get into the lane, you then start feeling sorry for the person in the ambulance. He or she might be inthe vehicle, or it might be on its way to pick up the sick person. In either case it's a bad feeling. The more you see others not really wanting to give way to the ambulance so that it can get on freely, the more your feelings rise.

Especially if you have bad memories of ambulances.

I do!

We twice had to call an ambulance, and sadly in both cases these were terrible experiences. One time, because of the delay in the ambulance arriving we lost a 22-year-old young boy, and the other time we lost a close relative as we were unable to get to the hospital with the ambulance in time.

Well, there are two sides to every coin, and these were one side of it. The other side is a different story.

Have you ever thought about the doctor in that ambulance?

I hadn't!

Until recently, when I met a lady who had worked as an ambulance doctor for the past five years.

The memories she shared with me were amazing.

From lonely men living in the ghettos of Ankara, who call them out and once they arrive try to persuade her to stay and have a cup of tea or a drink, to a grieving relative who, because the ambulance was delayed has lost a loved one and punches the doctor on the nose. So the doctor with a broken nose is late for surgery.

The list goes on and on...

However, the nice thing is that the ambulance doctor thinks that even though she has been beaten up many times she understands those relatives, how much they hurt and how angry they feel.

This lady married recently and had to quit her job. She now works at a different branch of the Health Ministry. In greater safety...

That is the other side of the coin. Which I'm sure many of us have never even thought of.

I don't know about you, but from now on whenever I hear ambulance sirens I'll also worry about the doctor in it.

Until next week keep cool and healthy!
