Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever been shocked by another person's reaction? Have you ever looked back and found out that they weren't the person you thought they were?
That person you had worshiped, that you had cared so much for, that you had given so much for, wasn't what you thought they were.
Well, I did and I'm sure many others -- even if they don't want to confess it -- have done the same.
You probably wanted to see them the way you did. The way you believed they were.
And one day: Wham! The reality hits you right in the face. But it's fine, don't worry, it doesn't kill you.
It hurts you a lot. You feel broken. You don't want to move. You feel numb. You can't be happy. You just see the empty part of the half-filled glass.
At one point I was going through a period such as this and although there was a lot of other happiness in my life I wasn't able to appreciate it, and so my Mom wrote me a story and attached a note which I'll share with you
A man of 92 years, short, very well-presented, who takes great care in his appearance, is moving into an old people's home.
His wife of 70 has recently died and he's obliged to leave his home.
After waiting several hours in the retirement home lobby, he gently smiles as he's told his room is ready.
As he walks slowly to the elevator, using his cane, the nurse describes his room to him, including the sheet at the window which serves as a curtain.
"I'll like it very much," he says, with the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old boy who's just been given a puppy.
"Sir, you haven't even seen the room yet, hang on a moment, we're almost there," says the nurse.
"That has nothing to do with it," he replies. "Happiness is something I choose in advance. Whether or not I like the room doesn't depend on the furniture, or the door -- rather it depends on how I decide to see it.
"It's already decided in my mind that I like my room. It's a decision I take every morning when I wake up. I can choose. I can spend my day in bed listting all the difficulties that I have with the parts of my body that no longer work very well, or I can get up and give thanks to heaven for those parts that are still in working order.
"Every day is a gift, and as long as I can open my eyes, I will focus on the new day, and all the happy memories that I've built up during my life. Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw later in life what you've deposited along the way."
So her advice to me in the attached note was to deposit all the happiness I could get in my bank account. And now I say, "Thanks to those for filling my account with happy memories, which I'm still continuing to fill
She also told me to remember these simple guidelines for happiness.
- Free your heart from hate
- Free your mind from worry
- Live simply
- Give more
- Expect less
P.S. Ever thought what love between two persons is?
You just fall in love with the image of that person that you create in your mind, and most of the time the person you see isn't even close to the real one.
Until next week, keep cool and healthy!
